From an idea like ‘Why not?’ towards the largest car rental network in Finland.

In 1948, Bertta Laurila pondered aloud, “Why do we borrow a car without charging for it?” The idea moved towards realization, and thus Laurila’s Car Rental was born, marking the inception of what is now Scandia Rent.

The following year, a son named Heikki was born into the Laurila family, and no one in 1949 could have possibly imagined that in the 2020s, Heikki would serve as the chairman of the board of a car rental chain that has spread across the broadest area in Finland.

The early-stage Laurila’s Car Rental later, in the 1980s, received its current name, Scandia Rent, and moved to its present chain headquarters location in Rantaperkiö, Tampere.

The years of growth

In the 2000s, Scandia Leasing was established alongside Scandia Rent to serve longer car rentals.

Today, we operate all over Finland from Hanko to Ivalo, and our network includes over 30 entrepreneurs and more than 100 locations. A family business that started from a single idea has been serving Finnish car rental customers for almost eight decades, and our gaze is firmly set on the future, even though the present continually offers interesting changes and opportunities for development.

Today’s car rental and leasing market is up-to-date and serves both consumers and businesses as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution, also alleviating the financial pressure on households in the 2020s, as a car is often the second largest expense for a household.

Internationalization while firmly holding on to domestic entrepreneurship

Since 2024, we have been part of a larger car rental network, MABI Mobility, which is one of the largest individual car rental companies in Sweden. MABI Mobility AB is part of Hedin Mobility Group, and this allows us to offer an even more comprehensive network and better service experience for our customers. Our operations in Finland are still based on our domestic entrepreneur network and local engagement.

Service culture at the center of operations

We continuously take into account customer service and ensuring a good customer experience in our operations. Local expertise and a wide partner network with various service providers are crucial in developing our service culture. In all our activities, we also want to acknowledge our Finnish roots and the traditional background of our family business. Our history is reflected in our daily lives, as Heikki Laurila still serves as the chairman of our chain’s board and is involved in all daily operations.

We want to continuously develop and be involved in advancing the industry, as we are its pioneers in Finland. We are constantly interested in new active and customer service-oriented entrepreneurs who want to join our network. We want to bring rental services and leasing opportunities to ‘every municipality’, as we believe in the invaluable assistance of local expertise in both replacement vehicle operations and leisure rentals.

We continuously collaborate with insurance companies operating in Finland, the Automobile Association, and Hansel, aiming to provide an unmatched car rental experience for both our contractual partners’ customers and our own consumer clients.
