In a nutshell
You can rent a minibus with a regular B driving license, as long as there’s space for no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver (1+8 seats). MABI’s small buses are registered in the M1 class and their total weight is under 3500 kg, so they’re safe to drive without a special professional driving license.
B license and 1+8 seats: What does the law say and who can sit in the driver’s seat?
Many people hesitate to rent a minibus because they’re worried about whether their driver’s license is enough. However, Finnish law is clear: a regular car driver’s license, or B-license, is sufficient, as long as the vehicle has room for no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver. That means a total of nine seats (1+8). The minibuses in MABI’s selection are registered exactly in this M1 category so that any member of the group can take the wheel without a professional license. So renting a minibus is actually much easier than many people think.
It’s important to only pay attention to the total weight of the car, which must not exceed 3,500 kilos. In practice, all the most common small van models are well below this limit, even with a full load of people and a week’s worth of ski equipment. When you book a car, you don’t need to worry about a D1-category small van license or professional qualifications. It’s enough that the driver has a valid B-license and feels comfortable behind the wheel of a vehicle slightly bigger than a regular car. Small vans nowadays are equipped and drive very much like modern cars, so the barrier to driving them is low.

Room for everything you need – how do you make sure your skis and suitcases fit in the ride?
The fact that a car has nine seats doesn’t automatically mean there’s room for nine hockey bags or all the skis. This is a common spot where many group trips hit a little crisis right in the pickup lot. When planning to rent a minibus, it’s a good idea to specifically check the length and flexibility of the cargo space.
MABI offers a variety of minibus options for different purposes. If a group is heading to the airport with only carry-on luggage, the shorter model is nimble and easy to park. But if it’s a sports team trip or a whole family’s cabin getaway, we recommend choosing the long version. The long version (often marked L2 or similar) has considerably more depth behind the actual seats, so you don’t have to stack suitcases in the passengers’ footwells.
Also remember these practical points:
- ✔ Seat flexibility: If there are only six passengers, some of the minivan’s back seats can often be folded or removed, giving you space for things like bicycles.
- ✔ Height: Keep the car’s height in mind if you plan to drive into parking garages. Small vans usually don’t fit into regular garages under two meters high.
- ✔ Loading: It’s best to always place heavy items at the bottom and as close to the center of the car as possible to maintain stability.
Why is renting a minibus often smarter than driving multiple cars?
When you add up the fuel costs of three cars, potential ferry tickets, bridge tolls, or parking fees in downtown Helsinki, a minibus almost always comes out on top. However, economy is just one part of the picture. The biggest advantage of a minibus is the clarity of logistics and the social aspect of traveling.
When traveling with just one car, the group stays together. This is a key factor, for example, for company project teams, who can use the travel time for meetings or to go over the day. On tournament trips, it’s also easier for the coach to make sure everyone is in the right place on time. One car also means only one parking spot and one driver at a time, so the others can rest.
You can’t ignore the environmental aspect in 2026. A low-emission minibus uses significantly less per passenger than three separate cars. For our corporate clients, this is often also a matter of image and part of a responsible travel policy. Choosing a minibus saves you money, stress, and the environment – and ensures that no one gets lost on the way.

Winter driving with a minibus: Tips for stable travel in slippery conditions
The Finnish winter puts its own challenges on all traffic, but when driving a minibus, it’s worth keeping a few physics-related things in mind. When there are nine people in the car and the cargo area is packed full, the vehicle’s weight is much greater than what you’re used to in everyday driving. This weight directly affects braking distances and how the car handles in corners.
MABI’s minibuses are equipped with modern stability control technology and high-quality winter tires suited for Finnish conditions, meeting the latest Traficom safety requirements for 2026. Still, the driver’s caution is the most important gear on slippery roads. A proactive driving style is key: keep a good distance from the car in front and start braking well in advance of intersections. If you’re heading to Rovaniemi or other snow-safe destinations, it’s worth checking with our locations about the availability of all-wheel-drive models, which provide extra confidence on hilly terrains and uncleared side roads.
For the comfort of passengers, it’s good to remember that a large interior warms up a bit more slowly than a small car. However, our current minibuses have efficient extra heaters and often also separate temperature controls for the passenger area, so you don’t have to sit in the back row wearing a winter coat the whole trip. Remember to check before setting off that all the windows are clear of ice and snow – visibility is a basic safety requirement in a big vehicle.
Booker’s checklist: These things are worth checking before hitting the book button
When group pressure increases and a car needs to be booked quickly, many people might forget to read the most important points. To make the trip successful and avoid surprises, go through the following list before confirming the reservation:
Check these before your trip
- Kilometers: Are unlimited kilometers included in the rental, or is there a limit on the mileage? For long gaming trips or road trips, unlimited mileage is often the most hassle-free choice.
- Deductible and insurance: Always check the amount of your deductible in case of damage. MABI offers the option to reduce your deductible with extra coverage.
- Number of drivers: Can more than one person drive the car? On long trips it’s safer if you can switch drivers.
- Fuel policy: Our basic rule is ‘full pickup, full return.’
- Equipment: Do you need a ski box or child seats?
What if plans change? Flexibility is the most important gear for a group trip
When traveling with a group, there are always more variables than when you’re on your own. Someone gets sick, tournament schedules change, or a project on the worksite gets delayed by a couple of days. At MABI, we get that, which is why flexibility is built into our service. We’re not just a faceless booking system, but a community of nearly 30 local entrepreneurs who understand the surprises of everyday life in Finland.
Our network of over 100 locations from ‘Hanko to Ivalo’ means help is always close by. If you need to extend your rental period, you can contact the specific location directly or handle it through our online service. Being part of the larger Nordic MABI Mobility network and Hedin Mobility Group allows us to offer a level of resource flexibility that smaller operators simply can’t match.
For many business customers, a minibus is part of a broader seasonal car or leasing solution. If the need for a minibus becomes regular, it’s worth asking for a quote on a corporate agreement. It makes booking even faster and pricing more predictable. Whether it’s a sudden change during a weekend trip or a schedule change for a longer-term project, our goal is for car rental to be the part of your journey that you don’t have to worry about. Our stylish, clean, and top-notch minibuses are waiting – all you have to do is choose your destination and enjoy the trip together.
MABI’s road service helps you in all situations around the clock. Safe travels!
